Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the wisest of elder statesmen: Dave @littlepawse9 ❤️ Dave isn’t able to go on walks like he used to in his younger days but he loves to sit in his pram and judge everyone. Make sure to look after your furry friend’s paws in this weather! Salt on the roads can irritate and even burn the pads and can be toxic if they lick it off their paws - make sure to clean those toe beans when you get home from an icy walk and try to avoid big piles of grit. Long fur around the feet can also collect ice balls which can be really uncomfortable, so it’s a good time to get a trim - ask your groomer to recommend a paw balm while you’re there!

Have fun and stay safe playing in the snow - summer is on its way!

Look at my clever girl doing all her tricks in a row 😻 Trick training isn’t just a fun way to impress your friends! It’s a great way to build your pet’s confidence and the bond between you.

Bullseye is a semi-feral rescue who’s had a lot of health issues, so she had a lot of sensitivity to having her paws handled and hands coming towards her face.

Teaching paw, high five and boop were a great way for us to take that at her pace and make sure those interactions were positive and consensual. Good things happen when she chooses to make contact when I ask for paw or boop (and continue to happen - claw trimming is a feast for her) but there are no negative consequences for choosing not to make contact.

Also, notice the hesitation before ‘up’ - possibly a slight distraction from Holly, plus the ‘up’ position is a vulnerable one - soft belly exposed and her balance is more precarious, so she checks that she is safe first. I don’t repeat the command, I just hold the hand signal and wait for her to be ready. I have to constantly remind myself not to repeat voice commands, it’s such an easy habit to get into but you’ll soon find that your pet has learned to ignore the first time, and the second, and the third 🥵

Since I don’t have a dog of my own, I’ve had a lot of fun practising on Bullseye what I’ve learned in my dog training courses over the past year and noticing the differences and similarities between cat and dog behaviour. More to come in 2021!

Today was supposed to be our last day of work before Christmas, but Tier 4 had other plans and we ended up closing two days early, so these rascals have my full attention!

Thank you to all of our wonderful clients who stuck with us and helped to keep us afloat during this difficult year - we feel so lucky to still be able to operate and to get to spend time with all your gorgeous dogs and cats.
